The following is a speech Bill made to his supporters as he
prepared to bicycle across America in 2004.
As most of you know, I will be biking across America in June and July to raise money for the American Cancer Society.
Let me tell you a little about the trip, as there are some misconceptions:
First, I don't believe that I'm CRAZY. And secondly, I AM GOING TO DO IT!
I learned of this Cross Country Challenge ride -as it is called- through friends who I had met on a bike trip in January. They each had made the trip twice and could not stop talking about it in glowing terms. They talked about some of the participants who had made the trip as a memorial ride for a friend or loved one who had died and the meaning it had for those riders. They also spoke of others who rode to raise money for a favorite charity. Some rode for the challenge and the sheer joy of cycling.
After some serious thought, I decided I would make this 52 day trip of 3800 miles in memory of Betty, who as you know fought a long and tough battle with cancer, and to raise funds for the ACS. After making the commitment to ride, I went to the Audubon Cares committee to see if we could work together. They encouraged and supported my efforts and together we expanded the idea of my also riding for others--and carrying a scroll of names you have given me of those you would like to be remembered and honored on this bike ride--be they courageous survivors or those we memorialize. So, that is what I am doing.
I don't take this trip lightly. It will be a tremendous challenge.
I am training hard during these months leading up to the trip. I look forward to the challenge, I have a new and great bike, I have hundreds of great supporters, and I have great reasons to make the trip.
I now have an operational web site at: bikingwithbill.org so that you can follow our progress across America with my journal and photos.
And finally, I want to say "Thank You" from the bottom of my heart for your support!!
